Treatment and rehousing of 2500 bundles of letters

Examination and sorting of letters according to their condition into three damage / treatment groups:

  1. Good/fair: no areas that have suffered from microbial degradation, might only need tear repair at most.
  2. Poor: areas that have suffered microbial degradation but are not disintegrated
  3. Very poor: severe overall microbial degradation with lacunae as result

The letters are currently evenly distributed in these three categories for initial quotation purposes and is therefore subject to review. The item price is based on on estimated times of 20(1), 40(2) and 60(3) minutes at an hourly rate of €50

Alcohol is a bactericide and fungicide but considering the age of the letters (mid 20th century), anilin based inks my run in alcohol aqueous treatments and would not be suitable for all documents.

Sterilising documents is not strict necessary when the climate conditions are optimised (RH at 55%) that will prevent regrowth.

Alternatively gamma sterilization is a viable alternative and suitable for all documents prior to conservation to prevent regrowth of mould and bacteria.

Proposed conservation treatments:

All

  • Unfold and remove extraneous items such as pins, rubber bands if any
  • Flatten creases with local application of isopropanol/water mix or heat spatula
  • Dryclean

Good/Fair

  • Tear repair where required

Poor

  • Consolidate degraded areas only with Klucel-G solution in propanol, add heat set tissue lining as additional supporting measure.
  • or Dry heat set tissue consolidation with heat spatula to be carried out if there is a risk of ink running.
  • or Aqueous methyl cellulose consolidation with added Jap tissue support applied with wheat starch paste (depending on suitability)
  • Tear repairs

Very poor

  • Leafcast infills of missing parts where suitable complemeted with Japanese tissue. The degraded areas may need to be prepared with alcohol/water to make the hygrophobic areas receptable for leafcast infills. (depending on suitability)
  • Alternatively Japanese tissue repairs/infills applied with wheat starch paste
  • or Heat set repairs only

All

  • Store in custom made acid free folders
  • Newspaper clippings to be store in a separate smaller folder or Mylar pocket to go with the letter to prevent acidic offsetting
  • Store in intermediate larger folders
  • Store in existing or new archive boxes
