Damage

  • Sewing structure severely compromised: broken sewing supports and threads, dislodged and damaged leaves
  • Spine leather detached and torn at the front joint
  • Sewing collapsed at the first 25 sections, the remainder of the textblock appears to be stable
  • Spine lining lifting at the first half of the spine

To prevent further damages and to make item accessible conservation is required

- Lift original leather spine
- Dismantle book and bookblock in its composite parts: boards and loose sections
- Tissue paper repair on damaged leaves
- Resew dislodged sections on new hemp cords with new linen thread at the original sewing positions
- Conslidate existing sewing structure where required
- Line book block spine with linen and reversible PVA
- Lace boards back onto the new hemp cords
- Add new hollow back
- Reback spine with new leather toned to match original
- Paste back original onto new
- Paste abrasions on boards with wheat starch paste
- Consolidate board edges and corners with the same where required
